US Open Day 3: Wayward Braids, Cramps, and Ugly Wins

Here's something I hadn't seen before... Caroline Wozniacki lost a point because her racket got stuck in her hair! Guess that's the risk you take when you have such pretty, long hair. She bravely tried to play the point, (I say brave because that could have hurt!), but failed. She won the match anyway.

I was so very disappointed to wake up to the news that No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska had lost in straight sets to Peng Shuai. It's not just that I like Aga's game, but I really liked her dress! It's always disappointing when a good dress gets eliminated early from a tournament. But pretty doesn't count for much on the tennis court, and Aga became the biggest upset of the day.
And if you needed further evidence that pretty doesn't count, Jelena Jankovic came through her match against Tsvetana Pironkova wearing this awful outfit. But JJ played good tennis, and according to Steve Tignor, flashed her pretty smile many times. I really enjoyed his write-up on the match here
Sloane Stephens continued to frustrate and alienate tennis fans by losing to Johanna Larsson despite being up a set and 3-0. Sloane played passively and didn't show any of the fight fans of the American have been desperate for her to reveal. In her post-match conference she spun the same story about it not being the end of the world and looking forward to her next tournament. The thing is, it's hard to believe she is looking forward to tournaments at the moment. Let's hope she gets her motivation back before she becomes another 'what if'.
I'm sure most of us have woken up in the middle of the night with a horrendous cramp and know just how painful it can be. But I don't think many of us have experienced the full-body cramps poor Steve Johnson endured up two sets to one today. Johnson could barely hold a racket and was writhing in pain when he retired against Tatsuma Ito. Johnson was as shocked as his 126th-ranked opponent.

''That's the first time I felt pretty useless on the tennis court,'' Johnson said. ''I'm a competitive guy. I'll lay it on the line as much as I can.'' Johnson had a really good summer and has reached a career-high ranking of 49. Impossible not to feel sorry for him!

Venus Williams is into the third round of the US Open, and she gave a pretty brilliant answer to this question on women's tennis. I think we can all forget how insightful and intelligent Venus is. Let's hope she sticks around this tournament for longer.
That's all for today. Stanislas Wawrinka just wrapped up his match against Thomaz Bellucci, the Swiss winning in four sets. Tomorrow's OOP can be found here
