It's been one hell of a year for Bernard Tomic. After making the fourth round of the Australian Open, he's seen his position as number-one ranked Australian player fall to little-known Marinko Matosevic. He's been in trouble on and off the court, most recently dubbed Tomic the Tank Engine for a series of uninspiring performances. But it's his problems with the police that have been the most hair-raising for fans of Australian tennis, with Tomic caught speeding and driving under a restricted licence in the Gold Coast earlier this year.
Now, Tomic has done it again.
Police were called to the Moroccan Apartments, where Tomic is staying on the Gold Coast, at 5:30am Monday morning (AEDT) after Tomic and his friend got into a fight. Officers had to separate the pair, and it has been reported that Tomic accused officers of targeting him following his problems with police in January. Tomic apparently went on to remind the police constantly 'who he was.'
Tomic is in the Gold Coast for court appearances related to his January driving incidents. Tomic has pleaded not guilty to failing to keep his BMW (which he has since sold) to the left of the double dividing lines and failing to stop for police.
Tomic celebrated his 20th birthday last weekend. The Australian public and tennis fans no doubt hoped leaving his teens would help Tomic succeed in the one thing we all want him to do - grow up.
After this latest incident it seems we will be kept waiting.
