US Open 2014 Fashion Hits and Misses

I've been moaning a lot about how boring tennis fashion has been this year to the point I didn't even bother to review Wimbledon, (they banned coloured undershorts and I gave up). So I'm grateful that the US Open is bringing it; I'd rather have ugly or wild fashions than boring, safe ones. With that in mind, let's start with Serena Williams.

Getty ImagesThis is a little Kim Kardashian pre Kanye, I have to admit. I think with leopard print you either love it and have scarves and pencil cases and shoes all covered in it, or you don't go anywhere near it. I am the latter. So while I like that Nike have done something different with this dress and I think the cut is nice, (if, like usual, too short), it's just not really me. But it IS Serena, and if anyone is going to pull off a leopard print tennis dress, it's her. So kudos to her for rocking the animal look with as much grace as she can, and paired with the pink it does come together. Now there was a blazer, but I'm going to be nice and pretend I never saw it.

US Open Day 1: Bees, Potty Mouths and Almost Upsets

In a day of 'almost' upsets, Nick Kyrgios managed to pull one off over 32 year old veteran Mikhail Youzhny. The dangerous Aussie faced the 21st seed out on court 17, and from what I hear it was a great match, (I caught the end of the second set at 3am... and went back to sleep). After winning the first two sets, Kyrgios let his foot off the pedal enough to allow Youzhny to storm back and claim the third set 6-2, but Youzhny failed to serve out the fourth to take the match to a fifth. Kyrgios took his opportunities in the tiebreak, something he's becoming quite well known for. Another thing he's becoming known for? Emotional tirades. Kyrgios earned three code violations for hitting a ball out of stands and two audible obscenities... one more and he would have been disqualified. Kyrgios apologised on Twitter for his outbursts.

Jack Sock Has a Message for Tennis

by JAMES HENRY

CINCINNATI – It all started with a simple text message.

About a month before the Wimbledon Championships, American Jack Sock texted Canadian Vasek Pospisil to see if he would compete with him in doubles.

“I knew him a little bit, but not too well,” Sock said during the draw ceremony for this week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. “I’m just very thankful that he decided to play.”

The duo advanced round after round after round, eventually reaching the final, looking over the net at Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, the winners of a record 15 Grand Slam titles.

The young guns – Sock is 21, and Pospisil is 24 – upset the legendary twins, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

“We went through a bunch of good teams and then to be able to beat the best team of all time on Centre Court in the final was an unbelievable experience and I’ll cherish it forever,” Sock said.
