US Open Day 2: Butt-Tweeners, Junior Winners and (Match) Point Penalties

Roger Federer. Michael Jordan. Marinko Matosevic. Butt-tweener. You can read more about it here

There's a lot of talk about the decline of American tennis and it's really boring. I'm guessing Cici Bellis was pretty bored of that storyline too, because the 15-year-old American took out 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in three sets today. Bellis won the USTA Girls' 18s National Championship to earn a wildcard into the US Open and is currently the junior World No. 2. She is the youngest player to feature in a Grand Slam main draw in nine years and had never played at WTA Level before. I have absolutely no idea how she did it because I didn't see the match, but I'm looking forward to watching her next round against Zarbia Dyas. And to put her age into perspective for you, here's a pic of her from 2011...

Wimbledon Recap: Day 4

Getty ImagesWimbledon has been reasonably upset-free so far, (unlike last year), but I was hoping Aussie teen Nick Kyrgios would be able to pull off the upset over Richard Gasquet. Wimbledon is on pretty late in Australia so after Nick dropped the first two sets 3-6 6-7 I went to bed. Nick was playing Ok, his serve perhaps wasn't clicking as much as usual, but Gasquet just looked too solid. So imagine my surprise when I woke up, (at 2am, to watch soccer) and saw Nick pulled off the upset 10-8 in the fifth. It's a really exciting time for Aussie tennis fans who don't want to support Bernard Tomic. Nick is confident and has swagger, but he's humble and hard-working too. He takes on wildcard Jiri Vesely in the third round, who took out Gael Monfils in five sets.

Maria Sharapova Answers Questions From ATP Pros

HEAD's latest player to player questions series featured Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet asking Maria Sharapova questions they were dying to know. To be honest, I'm not sure Djokovic was really dying to know what Maria's favourite Sugarpova candy was, but thankfully Andy Murray livens things up. Check it out!

Andy Murray Live Tweets Del Potro / Gasquet Match

It's good to know Andy Murray isn't so gutted he can't play the WTFs that he refuses to watch them! I've known fans who pretend tennis doesn't exist if their player can't play or loses early, (Ok, maybe I've done that once or twice), so it's good to know Murray loves the sport enough to watch it even when injured. He got pretty into the three set thriller than Juan Martin del Potro and Richard Gasquet played in their first round robin match. Just like us, he was tweeting along and at one point created a bit of controversy! Whoops!

Day 1 at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open

The first day of tournament (for me at least) is always about running around, getting your credential, making sure all your equipment made it in one piece, then fretting about what you accidentally left behind, and charging what you have.  After all that is done there is little time to actually explore the grounds, but in the time we had we caught up with 3 Serbians, 2 Frenchman, 1 Argentine, and some "Quirky" candy.

Federer Reclaims Tweener Glory

Earlier this week, at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Open, Rafael Nadal hit one of the prettiest tweeners I've ever seen, dethroning the King of All Tweeners Roger Federer (much like he dethroned him from his number 1 spot.)  But Fed didn't get mad, he got even, and hit something I've never seen before, a tweener while facing forward.  Roger eventually went on to lose the match to Richard Gasquet, but at least with that shot, he can reclaim his Tweener glory.
