Wozniacki Is On Her Way to #1 and Other Tennis Happenings

TOKYO - OCTOBER 02: Caroline Wozniacki (L) of Denmark and Elena Dementieva of Russia pose with trophies during the award ceremony after the Women's Singles final match on day seven of the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament at Ariake Colosseum on October 2, 2010 in Tokyo, Japan. Prepare for it people.  By the end of the year, Caroline Wozniacki is going to be World #1.   I know, I know, *sigh*  we are going to have another "number 1" who hasn't won a major, but we've seen it before (JJ, Safina), and them's the brakes when it comes to the ranking system.  She's won 5 tourneys this year, and the system rewards people who play, unlike some of her, ahem, mysteriously injured counterparts.   She has been consistent when everyone else is faltering, so in that regard, good for her. (Not necessarily good for the WTA)

BANGKOK, THAILAND - OCTOBER 03: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain and Jarkko Nieminen of Finland pose with their trophies at the end of the singles final match during the Day 9 of the PTT Thailand Open at Impact Arena on October 3, 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand. (Photo by Victor Fraile/Getty Images)

In other tennis news, Mikhail Youzhny has won his 2nd tournament this year, beating Andrey Golubev in the Malaysian Open Final, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who upset Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, went on to win his 2nd ATP title, defeating Jarkko Nieminen at the Thailand Open.

The China Open got underway today and began with a couple of upsets. Samantha Stousr and defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova were both defeated in the first round.

Video: Youzhny and Baghdatis vs. "The  Birds"

Very silly video of Marcos Baghdatis and Mikhail Youzhny visiting a bird park. I promise they are in it, but you must sit through some classic (and fabulous) Alfred Hitchcock first.  Beware!

Rafa is the Last Spaniard Standing: Who Woulda Guessed

First seed Rafael Nadal of Spain takes on countryman Fernando Verdasco, eighth seed, during their quarter-final match at the U.S. Open held at the National Tennis Center on September 9, 2010 in New York. UPI /Monika Graff Photo via Newscom

No surpise here.  Rafael Nadal is the last Spaniard standing at the US Open, after defeating Fernando Verdasco in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.  Initially is seemed that this match would go the distance; Fer came out smoking in the first set and was immediately up a break, which was the first time Nadal had been broken this tournament, but in typical fashion, Rafa found his form in the wind, and took the next 2 sets without Verdasco getting a look at another break point.
