How's this for an inventive training exercise? Pova shows off her football/tennis skills at the gym... looks more fun than lifting weights that's for sure.

I've been moaning a lot about how boring tennis fashion has been this year to the point I didn't even bother to review Wimbledon, (they banned coloured undershorts and I gave up). So I'm grateful that the US Open is bringing it; I'd rather have ugly or wild fashions than boring, safe ones. With that in mind, let's start with Serena Williams.
This is a little Kim Kardashian pre Kanye, I have to admit. I think with leopard print you either love it and have scarves and pencil cases and shoes all covered in it, or you don't go anywhere near it. I am the latter. So while I like that Nike have done something different with this dress and I think the cut is nice, (if, like usual, too short), it's just not really me. But it IS Serena, and if anyone is going to pull off a leopard print tennis dress, it's her. So kudos to her for rocking the animal look with as much grace as she can, and paired with the pink it does come together. Now there was a blazer, but I'm going to be nice and pretend I never saw it.
In a day of 'almost' upsets, Nick Kyrgios managed to pull one off over 32 year old veteran Mikhail Youzhny. The dangerous Aussie faced the 21st seed out on court 17, and from what I hear it was a great match, (I caught the end of the second set at 3am... and went back to sleep). After winning the first two sets, Kyrgios let his foot off the pedal enough to allow Youzhny to storm back and claim the third set 6-2, but Youzhny failed to serve out the fourth to take the match to a fifth. Kyrgios took his opportunities in the tiebreak, something he's becoming quite well known for. Another thing he's becoming known for? Emotional tirades. Kyrgios earned three code violations for hitting a ball out of stands and two audible obscenities... one more and he would have been disqualified. Kyrgios apologised on Twitter for his outbursts.
Maria Sharapova won the Best Female Tennis Player award at the ESPYs yesterday, but that wasn't the highlight for Maria fans. When she joined boxer Floyd Mayweather to present the award for Best Game both took the opportunity to make fun of their height difference leading to this totally adorable GIF.
Maria was introduced by Drake who said, "And from tennis, or whatever, Maria Sharapova." Maria gave some sass back to ther rapper, saying "Wow. Where was my introduction?" Drake hasn't had a good run with tennis lately...
Maria Sharapova was in some pretty special company while she watched Grigor Dimitrov win his first round match at the AEGON Championships. Maria was seated just behind Pippa Middleton, who is known to be a big tennis fan. After the match, Maria tweeted a photo of herself catching the tube home. Stars.. they're just like us, (not really).

Maria Sharapova claimed her second Roland Garros title and Rafael Nadal his ninth (!) over the weekend. A big congrats to both champions from us at onthegotennis.
I'm a little late on this but that turned out to be not such a bad thing. Originally, I had big plans to sing praises about Venus Williams's dress while tearing into her sister Serena's choice, but that wasn't to be. I won't review anyone already out of the tournament and lo and behold, both of them along with Li Na and Stan Wawrinka will be spared my fashion critiques due to their early losses. I'm sure that's a real silver lining for them. It allows me to review some new people, although we will start with the men who are so far largely unscathed.
Novak Djokovic's clothing sponsor Uniqlo are known for their basics and so far they've really lived up to that reputation in the tennis world. Everything here is pretty, er, basic, but it's an improvement on the black/red/white look we have seen too much of. I like the baby blue on Djokovic and paired with the crisp white it contrasts nicely against the clay. Djokovic loses points for a lack of originality, but it's a nice outfit all the same.
