Quick Q & A With Sloane Stephens

I got a chance to chat with up-and-coming American, Sloane Stephens while at the Sony Ericsson Open.  She's beautiful, sassy, funny, and wise beyond her years.  I think she is going to be great face for American tennis - just make sure you don't high-five her if you see her walking around the grounds, give her dap instead.  Check it out!

What did you do for your birthday (which was on March 20th)?

Oh my God I was here all freakin’ day!  I was like, I’m gonna have a good birthday, I’m gonna finish early, I’m gonna be outta here by 5:00 pm.  It’s party time!  Yeah - they fooled me, I didn’t leave here until 7:30 pm.  By the time I got back to the hotel it was 8:00 pm, I was so tired I didn’t even want to get in the shower, so I was like “Awww Man!”  It took me 30 minutes to even muster up the energy.  We didn’t even leave the hotel until  9:00 pm to go to dinner and then we had to wait an hour to eat!  By the time my birthday finished at midnight, I was just getting back to my hotel, so like my birthday was over before it even happened.  So, I’m like, this whole month is my birthday.  I don’t even care.

Do you have plans to celebrate later?

Well, I’m going to Charleston, I’m going to go visit my aunt in Charlotte because she works for the Charlotte Bobcats, that’s my favorite team, so I’m going to go seem all of them.

What is your passion outside of tennis?

What is your favorite food?

Well my grandma’s macaroni and cheese and my grandpa’s jerk chicken, and his curry chicken, and his curry crab.

Everything your grandfather makes?

Yeah, and he makes bread.  It’s really cool.  Everything they (her grandparents) cook.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

People who come up to you that don’t know you, random people, and come give you high-fives and touch you.  That is so disgusting [laughter] like, where have your hands been, I don’t know you.  That’s so weird.

So would you just prefer people to just ask you for your autograph?

Yeah!  Or just give me like a dap or give me elbows or something, but let’s not touch with our hands because there are too many germs in this world.  Have you seen the movie Contagion?  Things can happen, so we need to be careful out here. [Laughter]

What are you most afraid of?  Let me guess, germs?

Yeah, literally germs.  I carry around Purell all the time.  I have it in my bag, I have it in my backbag, in my suitcase, everywhere.  Germs and drowning.

Yeah, isn’t that weird?  And dogs, or course.   I’m deathly afraid.  If a dog was here I would be on the top of this fence.

Even like a little poodle dog?

No teacup, no Maltese, no Yorkie, none of that stuff. [Laughter]

No, I don’t like animals.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Do you know those little crawlers, Trolli crawlers?  They have little octopus ones and they have little snake ones, and they are like gummy bears covered in sugar.  Yeah....

Favorite movie?

Coyote Ugly or Save The Last Dance.  Those are my two favorite movies.

What is your favorite city?

Fresno, California

What is your favorite type of music?

I love everything.  I like everything except that screaming rock because I don’t know what they are saying.

What about country?

I love country.  That Honky Tonk, that’s my favorite song. [Laughter]  This morning we were listening to it actually and oh my god, my mom was like, “Really?”

No, but I listen to everything, I love every type of music, we can go Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Jay-Z.  All of them.

Rihanna? know it!

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

This one stripped shirt that I’ve been rocking for the last two years and I wear it like everywhere!  All my friends hate it, and they are all haters, but I wear it everywhere.

What color stripes?

It has 10 different colors on it, it’s just a stripped shirt.  It’s just like a cut-off, almost a long sleeve but not quite.  It’s just so comfortable and I wear it everywhere.  I really should retire it, because I have to retire my clothes because I wear them so much.

I want you to tweet a picture of this shirt.

Oh yeah, I will.  I will ‘cause I have it here, so I will. [Laughter]

What is the last thing you read?

The New York Times.

Celebrity Crush?

Fernando Verdasco.

Do you have a boyfriend?

What kind of things do you look for in a guy?

He has to be really funny, he has to be tall, he can’t have bad teeth, he has to smell nice always.

What if he is out playing tennis with you?

You know how Federer comes off the court and he smells like soap? [Laughter]  Like that.

He plays a 5-set match at Wimbledon and he comes off the court smelling the Tommy Hilfiger.  I mean, like, come on.  I need one of those. Ok?  That’s what I want.

If there was a fire and you could only save one thing, not a person, what would it be?

My cell phone.  Duh!! [Laughter]

Cause you gotta tweet right?

Right, I gotta tweet like, “Oh shoot, my house is on fire!”  Girl, get your cell phone, that is all you need.  With your cell phone you can call the police, you can call a hotel and make a reservation, and you can call a taxi, and that’s all you need.

If you could have one superhero ability, what would it be?
