After his first round win with partner Santiago Gonzalez at the Winston-Salem Open, I got a chance to sit down with Scottish tennis player Jamie Murray, and he graciously did the OnTheGoTennis Quick Q & A (although it really wasn't that quick - in a good way.) We chatted about Twitter, his wife, a botched national anthem, and why it's better to play doubles during the day session. You'll see there is a lot of "laughter" in parentheses, but they really do no justice to how much fun it was to talk with him. Enjoy!
No reason, just like listening to them on my computer and I just like the songs.
What are your biggest passions outside of tennis?
My wife, that sounds cheesy, but...(smiles). I like playing golf whenever I can, I like to play, so this is quite a nice tournament to do that because they have got quite a lot of golf to offer. I like being in my flat in London when I can because we are traveling so much of the year. It’s quite nice to be at home, and then when I can go back to Scotland to see my family and stuff it is always nice.
Have you played golf here so far?
Not yet actually because basically we only played [tennis] today, it was our first match. I probably could have done it yesterday but we were practicing and stuff. Maybe tomorrow if we don’t play I’ll do it.
What is your biggest pet-peeve?
I always panic when things get split (laughter), especially in our flat. My wife, she’s like, “Why do you always panic? Why do you always panic?” and I think it’s because of my Dad. When we were younger, every time we spilt stuff, he wouldn’t go mad at us, but he would panic thinking it was really bad and he would run through and he would try to do whatever needed to be done to make it better, so when I get like that it sort of phases me, puts me off my stride. Whenever you spill stuff on your sofa it’s stains and it’s always there reminding you that’s what happened, so I don’t want that (laughter).
And I guess with tennis I would probably say I hate playing night matches - being scheduled to play later in the evening - because you have to wait all day to play and no one really watches normally because they go to watch the singles and then they leave for the doubles matches. So I’d rather play during the day when more people want to watch instead of wait till 9:00 at night to play a match for an hour, because it is only an hour for the doubles matches.
You had a good crowd out there today.
Yeah, we did yeah. I mean, I guess we probably should have been on earlier but it’s just that the matches went slow, but like, sometimes you play in the states and stuff and you know you're scheduled to play the second match from 7:30 or 8:00 and the singles goes long so all of a sudden you are playing at 10:00 at night in a half empty stadium. I’d rather play on a small court with 200 people watching then play on a huge court with 20 people watching because it’s kind of depressing in a way. But that’s the way it goes. So if I had my choice I’d play all during the day.
Did the noise from the stadium court distract you? (Court 4 where he was playing is attached to Center court.)
Yeah, you’re definitely aware of it but yeah. I guess it’s just one of those things, that’s the show court and that’s where, you know, the show happens so it’s just one thing. It’s not very common that it happens but we were literally right next to the stadium court so it was fine.
It was quite funny though when the guy was singing the [U.S. national] anthem and it’s like cracking up. (During the national anthem, the sound kept going in and out.) I was thinking, “Does he know that is happening when he is singing?” You wouldn’t be able to continue I don’t think if you knew (laughter).
What are you most afraid of?
Heights, don’t like heights.
Do you have any lucky charms that you take with you on the court?
Sometimes, like sometimes my wife puts something in my bag. This year she gave me this, I’ll show it to you, no one has ever seen this before. She gave me that.
(He shows me a pin placed inside his bag that is light blue and pink with the words, “Super Husband.” He even was going to let me take a picture of it, but my camera failed me!!)
That’s really cute!
So it stays there.
How long have you guys been married now?
We’ve been married since October last year, end of October, so 9 or 10 months. Coming up for a year, so that’s been good.
What are any guilty pleasures that you have?
I was teeing off on the brownies, they are so good! Don’t know, nothing sort of outrageous or anything like that. I eat desserts and stuff all the time, but I figure I’m burning it off anyway so, nothing too crazy.
What is your favorite food?
I love my food. A good steak, that’s tough to beat. Sushi, I eat a lot of fish. Fish and potatoes you can’t go wrong with that. My wife, she doesn’t like fish, so I tend to eat more red meat with her, so when she is not at the tournaments then I get my fish intake for the month.
Are you a cook?
No, no, not at all (laughter). Kind of slowly learning. It’s something I’d like to be good at cause it’s great to be able to sort of make something that at least tastes good. Something to practice.
What is your favorite movie?
That’s a tough question there are so many movies.
What’s your favorite genre of movie?
Something that makes you think, I always like that rather than going to watch a Rom Com where you know where it’s going to end up. I liked Inception, Shutter Island, stuff like that. I guess Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor (laughter).
Is he really your favorite actor?
I don’t know, he’s obviously in some good movies. Matt Damon too.
What is the last thing that you read?
Right now I am reading about Bernie Ecclestone who is the owner of Formula One, all the stuff he went through to sort of get to where he is, sort of by hook or by crook. Not like criminal stuff, (laughter) but he is certainly an interesting character, that’s for sure. But I’m kind of getting a bit bored of the book because it is going too long.
How long is the book?
Well I don’t know because I am reading it on a Kindle, so it doesn’t actually tell you pages, just like percentage, and I’ve been reading forever and I’m 50% of the way through so I’m getting bit fed up with it.
So you are going to abandon the book?
Yeah, maybe, yeah.
If you had one superhero ability what would it be?
Maybe to make stuff move. Then I would never miss a tennis shot (laughter).
If there was a fire and you could only save one thing, not a person, what would it be?
Computer or passport.
