Tennis players are constantly the subject of scrutiny when it comes to what they wear on the court. Male or female, if you’re a top player, you can bet everyone will be giving the thumbs up or down to your Nike duds when a Grand Slam rolls around. Looking at on-court photos, we can deduce that the likes of Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer all have spectacular style.
But do they really?
Off-court might tell a different tale. Free from the restrictions of sponsorship, tennis players can choose exactly what they want to wear. And that’s not always a good thing.
On The Go Tennis will continue to analyse the off-court style of top players through 2013. Shoes, earrings, cardigans... nothing will go unnoticed.
It can seem like Victoria Azarenka has it all. She's the World No.1, she's self-assured and she's got legs longer than Serena Williams' trophy list. But no amount talent or looks buys you taste. Vika swings from punk princess to evening stunner, but which style suits her best? And how badly has she been influenced by a certain pop star?
Her best look
While we like a little punk Vika - and with those legs she can wear any pair of pants she likes - she tends to try a little too hard to funk up her look. We don't doubt that there's more than a touch of rebel to Vika, but when Vika goes elegant she looks really really good. How good? This good.
But I'm not totally convinced Vika needs to look ueber-girly to look hot. While the Australian Open 2012 was probably the best tennis Vika has ever played, it was also the best she has ever looked. After setting the tennis world alight in those shorts on the court, Vika mixed it up for the official trophy photos by wearing a casually cool singlet and skirt that showed off her extremely long legs. Her hair and make-up were under-stated; she couldn't have looked more comfortable as a Slam champion.
Vika often pulls off her best looks when it seems she hasn't spent ages in hair and make-up or debating leopard print vs. tiger print with her new friends. Slightly quirky, trendy dresses keep Vika looking like she just doesn't give a damn.
One upon a time there was a beautiful tennis player named Vika. She wore cute shorts and dresses, had hair that was slightly too long but always immaculate, and enjoyed wearing funky glasses on occasion. Then she met a man-child who used to be part of a band called LMFAO and was famous for promoting wiggly willys. Suddenly, Vika began to dress just like her new friend. The result was nothing short of a disaster.
Unfortuantly, Vika didn't stop at hipster glasses.
So while Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer are hanging out with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Vika has found herself as muse and, (possibly but hopefully not more than) friend to this guy.
At least she's being original.
However bad Redfoo may be, Vika's absolute worst fashion moment didn't come aid of him. Instead, she decided all by herself that the 80s perm was making a comeback. Somehow she found a hairdresser willing to turn her beautiful blonde locks into this...
Not just once, either. Yup, Vika made a genuine attempt to bring the perm back.
Hey Vika, 80s Sarah Jessica Parker called. She wants her hair back.
For the most part...
Vika is completely up and down. It's impossible to tell if her best looks are carefully constructed by a stylist, or if her worst are just a friendship gone overboard. We suggest Vika finds her own* style and works it like the beautiful, confident girl we all know she is.
*Unless that 'own style' involves the word 'perm'... then she can keep taking Redfoo's advice.
