NEW MOM vs. NEW "IT GIRL": Clijsters defeats Wozniacki in Straight Sets
Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 11:05PM A HUGE shout out to all the working moms out there!! Kim Clijsters, only 3 tourneys back from a 2 year retirement, and the mother of 18 month old Jada, overpowered Caroline Wozniacki to claim the US Open Women's Title. She is the only mother to win a Grand Slam since Australian Evonne Goolagong in 1980.
Overall its been an dramatic Women's Championship, to say the least. It began with watching number 1 seed Dinara Safina struggle with her confidence and her critics, barely making it out of the 1st two rounds, and then succumbing to the pressure in the 3rd. And then before you knew it, it seemed as if all the top seeded players were being defeated. I'm convinced that there was something in the NY water.
But, if there was something in the water Melanie Oudin clearly didn't drink it, as she went on her Cinderella run, defeating 3 seeded Russian players before being defeated by Wozniacki in the Women's Quarterfinals.
And how can you not mention the still unbelievable and ugly conclusion to the Serena Williams/Kim Clijsters match. What was most unfortunate, was that it took away Kim's achievements that night. A match that Kim described as the best she's ever played.
But, now she stands alone. Kim Clijsters, US Open Women's Champion. Seems as though it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Congrats!
