Lleyton Hewitt just can't catch a break. Once famous for being a true Aussie battler who never gave up, the ailing 32 year old is now better known for losing matches in five and being somewhat of a choker. Hewitt lost the final Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport to Nicolas Mahut on Sunday, despite serving for the title at 7-5 5-4. To add to Hewitt's misery, American Michael Russell went on a rant against Hewitt after the match, accusing the father of three of being a racist and a 'douchebag'.
Way to kick a guy when he's down! Ok yes, Lleyton's excuse was bit feeble, but I don't think it was 'douchebag' status. And I don't see what Lleyton's comments have to do with racism! Hewitt may have made some dodgy comments back in 2001, but that was over ten years ago and I think we can all agree Hewitt is a different man now. What's douchebaggy is bringing up incidents that are over a decade old! Can't wait to see if Hewitt responds.
And they say the WTA is bitchy...
Oh well, congrats to Mahut on his title.
UPDATE: Michael Russell has taken to Twitter to defend himself, saying he did not approve the comments written on his Facebook page.
Recent Facebook posts & comments were not approved by me as I am not the one managing my Facebook page!— Michael Russell (@MRusselltennis) July 15, 2013
I ONLY use twitter linked to my Facebook account. I NEVER post directly on Facebook if that answers anybody's doubts! Good night all— Michael Russell (@MRusselltennis) July 15, 2013
Russell clearly needs a new media manager, but aside from that, Russell's wife, Lilly, has 'liked' many of the comments on the original post. So yeah... I still have my doubts, Michael.
