The aptly named golfer Gary Player, a nine time major champion, has hit out at Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki, saying the romance is affecting McIlroy's game.
“When you’re in love as a young man, naturally golf seems to take second place for a while. It’s natural. Love is still the greatest thing that ever happens in our lives. He’ll come back strong,” Player said.
The 77-year-old Player should have stopped talking there. Unfortunately, he then started to ramble on about how the young Irishman needs to concentrate on finding the "right wife", hinting strongly that Caro was not the one.
But the thing is for a man like Rory, with talent galore, he’s got to make sure he has a woman like I’ve got, who has been married (to me) for 56 years, that has only encouraged me to do well and made sacrifices — massive (sacrifices), living in South Africa and having to be away. He’s got to find the right wife, and beauty is not the answer... He’s got to be intelligent and find the right wife. If he finds the right wife, if he practices and if he’s dedicated — a lot of ifs — he could be the man.
Ohh I get it. So Rory should dump Caro because she's TOO PRETTY and isn't willing to forfeit her career for his. To be the "right wife" Caro should quit tennis and concentrate solely on encouraging McIlroy's golf. McIlroy needs to find the right wife, just like he needs to find the right clubs or the right shoes...
Or... maybe McIlroy should just practice a bit harder??
YAWN. It isn't the 1950s anymore sorry Mr Player, and there is nothing stopping two people in love both having their own careers.
I wonder if he'd make the same suggestion for Tiger Woods and ski racer Lindsay Vonn??
Player later backtracked on Twitter, saying he actually thinks Caro is good for McIlroy, but by then the damage was done.
