Bad boys. We love em, then we hate em, then we love em again. For most women, there is nothing sexier than a man who loves you then leaves you begging for more. Endless songs are written about these men our fathers would certainly not approve of, but whether we simply daydream about these rebellious romantics, (hello, Eric Northman), or actually pursue them is another matter entirely.Only one thing is for sure, at some point in our lives we will find ourselves attracted to someone who strays a little on the naughty side.
If you're a bad boy addict, modern day tennis leaves a lot to be desired. On the surface, men's tennis is filled with gentlemen who hug their opponents after a loss and don't spit the dummy when a call doesn't go their way. They don't drink, they don't smoke and they certainly don't resemble James Dean (or Deen, if you prefer). But there are a few rough cuts amongst the polished stones, those who fit in more amongst John McEnroe and Ilie Nastase than the Wimbledon tea room regulars. Over the next few months, I will make an attempt to sort out those ATP players you'd take home to meet your mother from those you... definitely wouldn't.
This week's bad boy actually has a reputation as a gentle, family-orientated lad from a small town in Argentina. But behind the half-smile and friendly demeanor is a man not afraid to get what he wants. He may not be as bad as Marat Safin, but Juan Martin del Potro is certainly worth a second look.
These days, Juan Martin joins in with the ATP's nice guy club. He gives hugs at net, never fails to shake a hand and is always ready with nice words for his opponent. It hasn't always been that way. Before Juan got a grip on his emotions, he was infamous on You Tube for a 'your mother' argument with Andy Murray. The two men have known each other since juniors, and although they claim they've put any disagreements behind them, this spat clearly wasn't the first time they've not seen eye to eye.
More recently, Juan has been involved in a long standing argument with countryman David Nalbandian. Juan Ignacio Chela confirmed that the two are not talking, saying, "David and Juan Martin are the most important [players], but they will never be friends... (they) don’t like each other, it’s a reality." Furthermore, del Potro is sitting out Davis Cup in 2013 due to disagreements with captain Martín Jaite.
South Americans are generally stereotyped as a hot-headed bunch, so it is no surprise the Argentinian Davis Cup team falls victim to overblown testosterone every now and then. Juan Martin is clearly a man with two sides; half of him enjoys high-fiving kids in the crowd, the other isn't afraid to speak his mind. Naughty? Perhaps, but no woman wants a push over...
Bad to the Bone
Do a quick google search of 'Juan Martin del Potro girlfriend' and it doesn't take long to get an idea of his taste in women. Apparently near-naked models with spilling cleavage is how Juan keeps himself occupied in his free time. For a time Juan was linked with this... tennis enthusiast, but she seems classy when compared with the girl involved in his very own sex scandal during December last year.
This (NSFW) lovely lady confirmed just how far some wannabe models are willing to go when she leaked a recorded phone conversation of her and a man she claims is del Potro exchanging some very erotic words. Of course, the tape could have been of anyone (such as her possible side job as an erotic telephone operator) but we must admit it does sound like Juan, and he'd hardly be the first man in his early 20s to choose a less than ideal woman.
Unfortunately, Juan was dating model Stephanie Demner at the same time his phone sex scandal came out. She's rumoured to have since dumped Juan for his apparent infidelity. Clearly, if you're a leggy model you certainly stand a good chance of bedding the former US Open champion, but don't expect his loyalty to his longtime coach and team to extend to his girlfriends!
Bad Boy Gone Good
There's plenty of evidence to suggest that while Juan has a questionable taste in women to match his hot temper, he is a good boy underneath it all. Juan cites family as the most important thing in his life, and he's warm to both fans and the media. He doesn't smash rackets on a regular basis and never makes excuses for a loss. We have no doubt that Juan will eventually settle with one woman we all approve of who he will take on double dates with Andy Murray and Kim Sears... perhaps that's stretching it, but I'm hesitant to label him a 'bad boy' simply for sleeping around.
Anyway, his love of short skirts and long legs might be a welcome thing for some of his female fans...
Juan has his moments, but we think he's a good boy at heart.
