Australian Open Day 1: Too Much Electricity Not Enough Rainbows

Don't touch me I might shock youFashion #fail: Above was Fernando Verdasco's Adidas kit 'Electricity With High Energy'. I usually love Adidas outfits, but I think they needed to turn the energy down just a smidge.
Best quote about his oufit:
He's a man who's not uncomfortable with his looks. Any man who's prepared to be an underwear model is not going to be afraid of this gear.
- Jim Courier via The Syndney Morning Herald
Biggest Scares: The number 11 seed Juan Martin del Potro who lost the first set of his match against Adrian Mannarino 2-6, but then rallied back and took it in four, and the number 13 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov who had to pull a 5-setter to advance to the next round and later tweeted it might be due to his blood condition:
sorry for the scare! felt extremly bad.. Hope its not my blod condition! We see in the second round

Upsets (kind of): Fernando Verdasco, Juan Monaco, Flavia Pennetta, Jurgen Melzer, Yanina Wickmayer, and Ivan Ljubicic, and Lucie Safarova.
Winning (a little) Ugly: Bernard Tomic admitted he pulled a little psychological trick to win in his match against Light Bright. Fernando wasn't buying it though, and said he was more affected by feeling nauseous than anything else.
And finally, please check out a daily recap of some of the matches by our contributing writer Kait O'Callahan.
