Taylor Townsend Plays Doubles... Without A Partner

Not sure we will be seeing this again anytime soon. In World Team Tennis, which Taylor Townsend only elected to play after her friend Vicky Duval was diagnosed with lymphoma, Taylor was left on her own in a doubles match after an unfortunate injury that Taylor herself caused. After Taylor accidentally hit her doubles partner Liezel Huber in the back of the head off a crosscourt forehand, Taylor was forced to play Martina Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova all by herself! Talk about punishment! Taylor was not allowed to return serves from Huber's side and obviously lost the bizarre match.
According to Ben Rothenberg, Taylor won three points on her serve against her two opponents.
Good on her for toughing it out, but I'm not sure this will encourage her to return to WTT anytime soon!

Maria Kirilenko Is No Longer Engaged

Maria Kirilenko has ended her engagement to NHL hockey player Alexander Ovechki. The two were dating for a year before they became engaged in 2012. In her statement, Maria made it sound like the decision was her's.

"I have made a decision to break up our engagement,” Kirilenko said in an R-Sport interview. “There are a lot of reasons, but I wouldn’t want to go in detail. I’ll say just that our relationship is over, but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete."
While we're sorry these two didn't work out, I've got no doubt there are plenty of men out there secretly pleased that Maria is back to being single.

Maria Sharapova Leans on Mayweather, Snubbed By Drake at ESPYs

Maria Sharapova won the Best Female Tennis Player award at the ESPYs yesterday, but that wasn't the highlight for Maria fans. When she joined boxer Floyd Mayweather to present the award for Best Game both took the opportunity to make fun of their height difference leading to this totally adorable GIF.

Maria was introduced by Drake who said, "And from tennis, or whatever, Maria Sharapova." Maria gave some sass back to ther rapper, saying "Wow. Where was my introduction?" Drake hasn't had a good run with tennis lately...

Hello! Magazine Features Djokovic Wedding Snaps

Hello! Magazine snagged exclusive photos rights to Novak Djokovic and Jelena Ristic's wedding, and we must say the photos are beautiful. You can pick up a copy of the magazine here and check out a sneak peak of the photos here

Novak Djokvoic Weds Jelena Ristic

We don't have any pics yet (official photos are being sold to Hello magazine for charity) but we are excited to hear that Novak Djokovic and Jelena Ristic were married yesterday! The two tied the knot on the lawn of the Adriatic Resort in Montenegro (pictured above).
Fellow tennis players that are said to have attended the ceremony include Maria Sharapova, Viktor Troicki, Nenad Zimonjic and Janko Tipsarevic.
It's been a good month for Novak, who reclaimed the No.! ranking when he won Wimbledon and has now made it official with his long term partner. The happy couple are expecting a child later this year. A big congrats to them from us at onthego!

Wimbledon Recap: Day 4

Getty ImagesWimbledon has been reasonably upset-free so far, (unlike last year), but I was hoping Aussie teen Nick Kyrgios would be able to pull off the upset over Richard Gasquet. Wimbledon is on pretty late in Australia so after Nick dropped the first two sets 3-6 6-7 I went to bed. Nick was playing Ok, his serve perhaps wasn't clicking as much as usual, but Gasquet just looked too solid. So imagine my surprise when I woke up, (at 2am, to watch soccer) and saw Nick pulled off the upset 10-8 in the fifth. It's a really exciting time for Aussie tennis fans who don't want to support Bernard Tomic. Nick is confident and has swagger, but he's humble and hard-working too. He takes on wildcard Jiri Vesely in the third round, who took out Gael Monfils in five sets.

Wimbledon Recap: Day 3

Getty Images
Just as we were celebrating Victoria Azarenka's return to winning, she loses. Her three set loss to Bojana Jovanovski was a reminder of just how hard top players work day in and day out to get the wins expected of them. Spend a few months off due to an injury and the setbacks are enormous. Vika came off court "pissed off" (her own words) that she'd lost and somewhat impatient to get back to her best.

"I have to be [hard on myself]," Azarenka said. "I have to be realistic. I cannot sit here and say it's all great, because there's no moving forward from there. I'm going to be hard on myself just because I want to be better. ... I want to go back to practice like tomorrow, maybe even today. That's it... Im ready to work."

It's a good thing - compare her determined attitude to that of Sloane Stephens complacency and it explains why one of them is a Grand Slam winner and the other is fading out.
